Tata's CNG Engine For Commercial Vehicles

Tata Motors has received a BS6 Type Approval Certificate for a 3.8L NA SGI CNG engine from ARAI. The power of motor 4T to 9T GVW buses and trucks - such as 407, 709 and 909.

Tata Motors today announced that its 3.8L NA SGI CNG engine, which powers the company's commercial vehicles, has received a BS6 Type Approval Certificate from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). With this, the company has now become the country's first automaker to achieve Bharat Stage VI (BS6) certification for naturally aspirated CNG engines. The CNG-powered BS6 engine will be mated to Tata Motors' 4T to 9T GVW buses and trucks such as the 407, 709 and 909 that previously came with the BS4 variant. ARAI certification includes compliance with tailpipe mass emissions as well as on-board diagnostics (OBD) criteria, as mandated by government regulation.

The BS6 norms for all vehicles are set to come into force in India from April 1, 2020, and many manufacturers are already working on preparing their vehicles to be at least BS6 by this year. Now, the upgrade from BSIV to BSVI is, in fact, complex engineering, and Tata says that the challenge is to take technological advances to the limits, and is a change of infrastructure and facilities needed for this development. This is why the company now has a status of "Emission Testing Facility" set up at the Power Systems Engineering Division (PSE) at ERC, Pune. This feature is one of the important milestones for BS6 implementation.

Speaking on the occasion, Tata Motors Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Rajendra Petkar said, "This BS6 engine certification milestone has been achieved with an in-depth design and development focus, in-house capabilities and benefits from our technology partners Picking up. We've worked. " It is difficult for our customers in the commercial vehicle market to create market leadership positions with affordable, best-in-class natural gas vehicle products, and this development of the BS6 solution will further strengthen our market offering. "

As for the engine itself, Tata's 3.8-liter NA SGI CNG engine is a naturally aspirated motor that delivers a maximum of 84 Bhp at 2500 rpm and develops peak torque of 285 Nm at 2500 rpm. The engine is also paired with a sequential gas injection technology, while the exhaust after-treatment system features a three-way catalytic converter that reduces pollutants to the limits mandated by regulation.
